造成英文是 cause，是一个常用的动词，表示一种结果或事件是由某种原因或行为导致的。易造成误解的是 cause 后面一般都需要接两个介词，即 cause something to somebody/something。其实 cause 后面也可以接一个直接宾语，即 cause something。比如，The storm caused severe damage to the building. 就相当于 The storm caused severe damage.
造成一个人、机构或国家的某种损失或影响，可以用 cause sb./sth. harm/damage/loss，比如：The new tax policy caused significant harm to small businesses. 而造成一种情况或状态，则可以用 cause sth. to be/do。比如，His behavior caused the meeting to be delayed for an hour. 就是他的行为造成了会议延迟了一个小时。
除了 cause，还有一些相似的动词，如 lead to，result in，amount to 等，都可以表示“导致”之意。lead to 通常表示不良结果，如：His bad temper led to the breakdown of their marriage. result in 则较为中性，如：The accident resulted in injuries to several passengers. amount to 也可表示“归结为”，如：Their efforts amounted to nothing.
